I changed the registry setting as indicated - it had text/css rather than text\css, but it had no effect.

I doubt that would be an issue now -- it was a hack required a couple years ago.
Can you send me some screenshots? Also, tried it on other networks? from other locations? Generally something like this is a network routing/connectivity issue.

It's specific to this PC (Windows XP) and may well be a firewall issue. But I've yet to figure exactly what setting is preventing avatars - and twit pics in tweets - from being displayed. Any ideas?

Specific sites may be getting blocked. Can't tell from here, I'm afraid.

Why would that affect only Twitter avatars? Because they're quite visible on the website (using Firefox). Likewise, clicking on a broken image twitpic link still displays the pic in the browser. If something's getting blocked, it's only for Spaz not for everything on this PC which requires Internet access.

the PC may treat Spaz differently?
Point is: This seems specific to your machine. I can't reproduce it, and I've gotten no other reports like this. I don't know how you have things set up, and I don't have the expertise to solve it. Short of you transporting the machine here for me to take a personal look at it, I don't think I can help much. I'm sorry though! 8(

I have resolved the issue. IE was set to connect to the internet using a proxy, and so could not connect. Fixing that and then restarting Spaz has made avatars and images visible.
